The Edward Johnston Foundation’s Fourth Ditchling Annual
International Seminar takes place over the weekend of 4/5/6
June 2004. Our international speakers this year are the distinguished
type designer Matthew Carter from the USA and the lettercarver Wolfgang
Jakob from Germany, son of Sepp Jakob author of the definitive
Schrift und Symbol. John Miles of Banks and
Miles will talk about the partnership’s corporate identity programme for the
Royal Mail, Ieuan Rees will demonstrate and discuss large-scale calligraphy
and Brian Keeble lectures on the vision of WR Lethaby. The seminar ends with
Philip Moore’s talk ‘Who’d be a Printer?’
Ditchling lies in glorious Sussex countryside under the
escarpment of the South Downs. The village was the home of Edward Johnston,
Eric Gill and the community which was to make its name world-famous among
those who value the tradition of fine letterforms. The EJF's annual
international seminars are gaining a reputation as a relaxed and informal
gathering for the widest spectrum of lettering interests.
